About this Project

The NIFTC, the Nerve Centre and CCEA received funding from NESTA – the National Endowment for Science Technology and the Arts to carry out Creative Learning in the Digital Age. The pilot intends to encourage the use of moving images in the classroom as part of whole-class teaching and project work across the curriculum. The pilot developed from the NIFTC’s Digital Film Archive. Phase one concentrated on History at Key Stage 3 (year 10) with Union to Partition (1910-1922) and the Twentieth Century World (World War One). Phase two expanded into MIA, while continuing to support the History teachers.

The NIFTC’s Digital Film Archive was originally constructed as a public access resource of moving image material of Northern Ireland from 1897-2000. The new creative learning in the digital age website includes an archive of moving images with exemplars including teachers’ notes, exercises and contextual and assessment material.

The project helped support pilot teachers through:

  • The provision of teacher and pupil training, delivered by the Nerve Centre and Studio ON
  • An online resource for MIA, with film clips, curriculum information, assignments and assessment information, as well as an area to post pupils’ work.
  • The provision of 6 Apple Media labs (power book, dv camera and a digital camera) available for loan from the NIFTC for project work. Please book this through Karen Quinn.

Funding for the project has now conclude. Comments on the website are welcomed. For further information contact: Karen Quinn, NIFTC, 21 Alfred Street, Belfast, BT2 8ED, 028 9023 2444, karen@niftc.co.uk
