Easter Rising
also known as the Easter rebellion. This was planned by the supreme council of the Irish Republican Brotherhood who sought German help. The Irish Citizen Army and Irish Volunteers joined in and on Easter Monday 24th April 1916 several large buildings in central Dublin were seized. After heavy artillery bombardment, the rebels surrendered on 29th April. Fifteeen leaders were executed by firing squad and Sir Roger Casement was hanged.
