Orange Order
A secret oath-bound organisation formed after the Battle of the Diamond (in north Armagh) in 1795. Members pledged themselves to celebrate the victory at the Boyne every 12th July and to support the King and his successors so long ‘as he or they support the Protestant constitution’. Marching was frequently banned by the government until the 1870s.
