t

Treaty
a formal agreement between states or governments. For example, the Versailles Treaty of 1919 was between the victorious Allies and Germany. The 1921 Anglo-Irish Treaty was between the British government and Dail Eireann: divided views on that treaty led to the Irish Civil War of 1922-23.

Trench foot
a painful swelling of the foot caused by long immersion in water. Many soldiers in muddy trenches on the front in the First World War suffered from this condition.

Trenches
long, narrow ditches. In the First World War these were dug to protect soldiers from machine gun and rifle fire. The network of trenches from Switzerland to the North Sea became known as the Western Front, and from the Black Sea to the Baltic Sea as the Eastern Front.

Truce
an armistice, an agreement to stop fighting before a final settlement is made. The Armistice of 11th November 1918 was followed by the Treaty of Versailles on 26th June 1919. The truce between the IRA and the British forces on 9th July 1921 was followed by the Anglo-Irish Treaty of 6th December 1921.
