The 20th Century World
World War One
Introductory Transcript
Ireland seemed to be on the verge of Civil War in 1914. Yet when a larger war broke out in August 1914 Nationalists and Unionists suspended their argument. Thousands from the Unionist and Nationalist communities joined the British Army to fight Germany. Irish troops fought in the trenches on the Western Front, and in many other areas of the Great War. Like troops of other nations they struggled and suffered in the poor conditions of the trenches. However, they also gained new comrades and achieved more than many of them thought was possible. The people back in Ireland got regular reports in the newspapers and they could watch newsreels showing the great battles. However, soldiers’ letters were censored and much of the media was controlled. So did people at home really know what was happening? |
