Preparing for Exam
Sourcing Clips
You can successfully get through your first AS year with no more than six clips, played from the DVD. Although, suggestions are offered for suitable clips, it is healthy practice to find your own as an integral part of updating your skills & subject knowledge.
Although you can play the clip from the DVD and carry out the exercise very efficiently, it makes sense to build up your own Clips Bank. This is a teacher-made resource of extracted film clips, which exemplify one or more of the above. (I have included some suggestions at the end of this section). For your first year, this need only be a collection of 6 clips and you can even simply note the DVD chapter and play it from there. However, the preferable method is to compile your clips on their own separate disc.
This gives you the option of copying the DVD for each of your students at the start of the year. This way the student can also be set the task as homework, then take part in the self-assessment exercise in class.
One way to capture from DVD is through an analog/digital convertor and www.kelkoo.co.uk will find the most competitive price for you (currently around £100). This will allow you to feed from a DVD Player, via Scart into a DVD Recorder or into your editing software where you can add titles and prepare as need be.
The shorter (up to 2 minutes) films on BBC Film Network will also be a valuable source for this exercise, particularly if you have a restricted budget/facilities.
As always, if in doubt about the legality of using video material for educational purpose, consult the section of this site dealing with copyright law.
