Importance of Deadlines
A distinguishing factor about this course is the amount of external factors which can hinder a student’s practical work. This is why the emphasis should be on what the student does have access to (actors-props-locations) rather than a hypothetical situation. A student may be held back by very genuine circumstances but several ‘why I couldn’t film this weekend’ excuses can make for a very big chunk of lost time. If you arbitrarily impose a series of deadlines across your year it will go a long way towards easing the pressure on you towards the end of the year. For example, deadlines could be imposed for initial ideas, first draft of screenplay, etc. It is helpful also to give your students a submission date a few weeks prior to the actual one to leave time for reviewing their work.
It’s worth noting here that as we move assessment and coursework submission online, one situation being looked at is that of the student submitting their ‘production diary’ in the form of a blog requiring specific regular updates. This is also aimed at reducing the stressful ‘last minute’ approach that some students can fall into.
