Teaching Moving Image Arts

The Course in a Nutshell

At AS Level, coursework consists of:

  1. A 40-60 second film exercise*
  2. A 3-5 minute short film (Final Product)
  3. Written material:
    Statement of intentions (800-1200 words)
    Production Notes
    A Screenplay and Storyboard or Illustrated shooting script
    Evidence of management, organisation, planning of time and resources
  4. Evaluation (800-1200 words)
    *1-4 are collectively known as the Foundation Portfolio
  5. The Online Exam (Students are shown clips and must answer questions about the use of film language)
    * Note Rostrum and Stop Motion Animation products can be a minimum of 30 seconds for the exercise and 90 seconds for the final product.

At A2 Level, coursework consists of:

  1. An Illustrated Essay (Students have the choice of the essay of 1500-2000 words or submitting their work as a PowerPoint presentation or video presentation)
  2. Two Production Exercises of 40-60 seconds (same rules apply to animation exercises)
  3. A 5-7 minute short film
  4. Written Pre-production material (see above)
  5. Evaluation
  6. Online Exam – This time the exam is longer and features a ‘compare and contrast’ question on two set film/animation texts which you will know in advance.
